  • Why we still use the 1970 edition CAT

TestPoint™
Thank you for considering our TestPoint™ Placement Testing Service. We trust that the following will be of help to you as you consider which of our three testing services you wish to use.

1.

What is the primary difference between the California Achievement Test (CAT)—both the paper and online versions—and the TestPoint exam?
The CAT is an achievement test, although it has also been used for placement purposes for over twenty years by the Christian Liberty Academy School System (CLASS) home education program and for the recommendation service of Christian Liberty Press.

TestPoint is designed for use as a placement test.

2.   What is the difference between a placement test and an achievement test?
Placement testing is used to help find out whether a student has sufficient knowledge to enter a particular grade level. The results could also be used to determine what materials should be used by a student within a grade level.

An achievement test is used to determine the general skill or knowledge level attained by a student regardless of grade level placement. Its purpose is to evaluate what a student has learned over a period of time.

3.   When was TestPoint developed?
The TestPoint research, development, and field testing took place over a six-year span beginning in 2002.

4.   Who developed TestPoint?
The development of TestPoint was guided by Joe Haas, Ed.D., Executive Director of the North Carolina Christian School Association, and master test authors.

5.   How many schools and children participated in testing and developing the TestPoint exam?
Students and faculty from over 80 schools participated at differing levels during the research and development of TestPoint placement tests.

6.   How can I determine which grade level to use if ordering the TestPoint exam?
The TestPoint is designed as a placement exam. TestPoint can help you determine what books to use with your student or even if the student is ready for the projected grade level. You should select the grade level the student will be entering. This is particularly important if you are also ordering our curriculum recommendation service.

7.   How many components are there to a TestPoint exam?
TestPoint exams have three components or "tests"—reading, language, and math.

8.   How many questions are there per TestPoint “test”?
The number of questions varies slightly from grade level to grade level. Here is a breakdown of each grade level license and the number of questions per test (reading, language, and math):

  Kindergarten: 25 per test
1st and 2nd: 35 per test
3rd–8th: 50 per test
9th–12th: 40 math, 50 reading/language

9.   How quickly will I receive the registration e-mail after ordering a TestPoint Placement Test for my student?
You will receive the registration e-mail, with a license key, within one business day after ordering a TestPoint exam.

10.   Once I receive the license key, do I have to take the test immediately?
You do not have to take the test immediately because TestPoint licenses NEVER expire. However, bear in mind that TestPoint’s usefulness will decline markedly if you wait, for example, several months to give the test to your child.

11.   Can I log in, look over the test, and log out, then have my student take the test later?
TestPoint tests are not timed, so there is no time penalty against the student if the teacher would like to examine the test in advance.

12.   How long does it take to complete the TestPoint exam?
Typically, the student will take two hours to complete an exam (reading, language and math), however, since there is no time limit set the student can take as much or little time as needed. Also, since the higher grade tests are more in depth (more reading/working out of problems) these will, on average, take longer to complete in comparison to the lower level tests.

13.   Will my results be e-mailed to me?
Results will be e-mailed in HTML format. Once you receive the results, we suggest that you print out a copy for your records and save a copy to your hard drive.

14.   How soon after completing TestPoint will I receive my results?
Each TestPoint exam will be scored immediately after its three component tests are completed. Within a few moments an e-mail with these results will be generated and sent to the parent/teacher.

15.   How long do you store results on line and how long will I have access to my results?
TestPoint results will always be available to you at www.mytestpoint.net. An online database stores the TestPoint results, past and present. If you are unable to access them online for any reason, contact Christian Liberty. We will e-mail or mail the results directly to you.

16.   What should I do if I need to obtain past results?
If you need to obtain a copy of your child’s past TestPoint results, you have two choices.

You can obtain the results directly from www.mytestpoint.net. Use the student’s authorization code and login on the Web site. Click on the past score reports to access past TestPoint reports.

If you have problems obtaining past results directly from the Web site mentioned above, contact Christian Liberty Press to have those results re-sent to you. Call us at (800) 348-0899 and press 6, or e-mail us at custserv@christianlibertypress.com to make the needed arrangements.

17.   Who else will have access to my results?
Only selected Christian Liberty administrators and High Ground Solutions personnel will have access to results.

18.   In what format will my child’s TestPoint scores be reported?
Your child’s results will be reported as raw scores, grade equivalent, scaled score, and percentile rank.

19.   Does TestPoint meet my state’s requirements?
At this point, there are no state requirements for the TestPoint placement tests. In addition, the TestPoint exam does not meet the requirements of any state that compels home school students to take an achievement test.

20.   Will the TestPoint exam work for special needs children?
The TestPoint Placement Test is not designed for special needs children.

21.   What are the system requirements for the TestPoint testing service?
It is imperative that you have a high speed Internet connection if you wish to use the TestPoint testing service. If you only have a dial-up Internet connection, you should order our paper based CAT achievement testing service.

You may use either the Windows or Macintosh operating system on your computer; the operating system is irrelevant. Any commonly used web browser can be used with the TestPoint testing service. We suggest the following:

  Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0+
Firefox 3.0+
Google Chrome 4.0+
Safari 3.0+

22.   What do I do if I am having a problem with Internet speed or connectivity while taking the TestPoint exam?
First, contact your local Internet provider to determine if there is anything wrong with your local network. If your local Internet provider cannot resolve the issue, you should contact Christian Liberty Press at custserv@christianlibertypress.com or (800) 348-0899 (press 6). We will provide you with a full refund. You can then order our paper CAT achievement testing service.

23.   If after ordering the TestPoint testing service, I decide to enroll my child in CLASS, does my student need to retake TestPoint?
If you decide to enroll your student with CLASS within six months after receiving the test results, the cost of the test will be deducted from your student’s tuition fee. However, if you enroll your student in a grade level using a different test than the one he or she originally took, we will NOT deduct the test cost from your student’s tuition fee.

24.   May a home school group or school make a bulk purchase of the TestPoint exams?
No.  Each TestPoint license must be purchased separately for a single student.
