“For the conservative, human beings come into this world burdened by obligations, and subject to institutions and traditions that contain within them a precious inheritance of wisdom, without which the exercise of freedom is as likely to destroy human rights and entitlements as to enhance them.”
― Roger Scruton, Conservatism: An Invitation to the Great Tradition
The above quote by Sir Roger Scruton gives pause for thought, if only to remind those of “the faith” that we do not live free without any obligations in a world created by the divine. For those without faith there really are no “traditions” worthy of maintaining; only “obligations” projected on human beings by man-made “institutions.” Sadly, said institutions, although begun long ago and far away whether by church or state, have lost their power to encourage the loyalty of men and women in our modern world.
One can see the corruption that permeates the fields of academics, economics, government, media and the medical profession to realize that we are ruled by a Kakistocracy. That’s why they are always in the news, and equally in the courtrooms.
A kakistocracy is, according to Wikipedia,[i] a government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens.
Our current situation in America, not to mention other countries, is the proof text of the veracity of the Scruton quote at the onset of this article: when people lose faith and hope in the promise of the next world, they live as if this world was all there was in existence. A world exempt of the “obligations” and “traditions” and “wisdom” Scruton noted. A world of no rules nor obligations except those foisted upon citizens by those in power because they can.
From this life of faithlessness comes three types of people:
1. People who deem life worthless and live in despair
2. People who stumble on as sheep serving their masters
3. People who become the lions of this world and rule over the others
All three are an example of a corrupt, faithless spirit that only increases the problems of the nation but even more sadly furthers them.
Yet why be surprised – they are home grown and a reflection of our homes, schools, media and entertainment industry that reflects their dark, chaotic worldview generation after generation. From childhood to adulthood, they grow into the people we allow to be in their positions of power in various spheres of influence. Indeed, we defend them every election period as we gather like fans at a sporting event when they speak and hang on every word. We send our children to their schools and act surprised that they graduate as something other than what they were when young. We tune into their news broadcasts and entertainment venues and are surprised to wake up and find that both Plato and Machiavelli were correct about the difference between appearance and reality.
Perhaps that’s why the supposed “freedom” promised by politicians and pundits never seems to arrive?
The Future Will Be Determined by the Self-governed Citizens
Christian Liberty Homeschools offers a curriculum wherein character counts and is actively taught as well as the principles that true “freedom” is based upon: freedom requires obligations to God, family, and neighbors and an orderly church and state relationship. We stand opposed to “Woke” activism in the name of some mythical utopia that has never existed anywhere as the failed Communist experiments[ii] they promised make clear.
